Конотопська відьма (театр ім. Івана Франка)
Mysticism, witches, intrigue, and passionate love. All this can be seen in the legendary play “The Konotop Witch” directed by Ivan Uryvsky, one of the most talented directors of modern Ukrainian theater. Come and enjoy a new interpretation of Ukrainian classics by the renowned Franko Theater!
A Dangerous Game with a Witch
The play “The Konotop Witch” – is a bold modern interpretation of the eponymous satirical-realistic novella by Hryhorii Kvitka-Main’yanenko. This mystic phantasmagoria transports the audience to the small Ukrainian town of Konotop, where a new sotnik Mykyta Zabrikho has just been elected. He decides that his high status will help him win the heart of the beauty Olena, to whom he has already unsuccessfully proposed.
Mykyta Zabrikho, just in case, decides to ask for help from the witch Yavdokha. But she is a capricious creature, used to acting exclusively by her own rules. The witch’s interference triggers a series of events that gradually lead the story to a completely different, grim finale. Was it worth it?
The Konotop Witch in Lviv
Ivan Uryvsky and Franko Theater created their own version of the Ukrainian classic. In the new interpretation, as in the original, many meanings are embedded – political, life-related, spiritual. For example, “The Konotop Witch” by Uryvsky raises the theme of love and betrayal, the choice between Light and Darkness, power that accidentally falls into the wrong hands, renunciation of faith, etc. According to the director, “to some extent, it is a kind of fairy tale with a dreadful ending”.
The play harmoniously intertwines satire, Ukrainian folklore, and a modern sound, and each scene keeps you in suspense until the very last moment. “The Konotop Witch” by Franko Theater – is a cult modernized story about the terrible consequences of superstitions and human ambitions. Come, you have to see it!
